Glenn Powell is a lover of pie and a killer of people in the first Hit Man trailer, released by Netflix on Monday. Much like pie, this is a dude who contains layers! The film will come to Netflix on June 7, following a limited theatrical release.

Directed by Richard Linklater, with a screenplay co-written by Linklater and Powell, Hit Man first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival back in September, to rave reviews from critics. The film is based on a 2001 Texas Monthly article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth, which details the true story of Gary Johnson (played by Powell in the film), a professional assassin who was hired to kill more than sixty people in Texas. The twist? He was not an actual hit man. He was an undercover cop.

In the teaser trailer, which you can watch by unmuting the video in the player above, Powell meets his love interest, Maddy Masters (played by Adria Arjona) in a diner for some pie. “All pie is good pie,” Powell tells her with a flirtatious smirk. The trailer launches into a series of quick shots set to the 1967 hit single “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie” by Jay & The Techniques. We see Powell meeting with potential clients and flirting with Arjona—including one shot of him shirtless smiling at her in a steam-filled bathroom—while pull-quotes from critics deem the film “steamy” and “sexy.”

No doubt that will peak the interest of viewers who recently saw Powell and Sydney Sweeney get it on in the R-rated romantic comedy Anyone But You, which recently surpassed $100 million at the box office.

Hit Man is the fourth collaboration between Powell and Linklater, after Fast Food Nation, Apollo 10 and 1/2 and Everybody Wants Some!!, but this marks the first time that actor and director have co-written a script together. In an interview for Tudum to promote the release of the trailer, Powell recalled being a teen actor on Linklater’s Fast Food Nation. “When I was 14, I worked with Rick for the first time, and at that point, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, he’s one of the greats. I’m getting to be on a film set, a Richard Linklater film set.’ And now it’s 20 years later, and I look at Rick the same way. I just pinch myself every day that I get to be here.”

Hit Man will be released on Netflix on June 7, 2024. Additional cast includes Austin Amelio, Retta, Sanjay Rao, and Molly Bernard. The film will have a limited theatrical run prior to the streaming release, but the Hit Man theatrical release date has not yet been announced.
