The Albany Empire, a football team in the National Arena League that is owned by controversial former NFL star Antonio Brown, has descended into chaos after players were not paid and a subsequent incident on the team bus led to misdemeanor charges.
Empire head coach Damon Ware confirmed on social media that players and coaches have not been paid since April 21 (perhaps not coincidentally, around the point Brown took full ownership), and said he has left the team.
No one received direct deposits before the team’s game against the Carolina Cobras over the weekend, and the team played the game without pay, an anonymous player told the Albany Times-Union.
Acting team president Alberony Denis said the lack of payment stemmed from a payroll issue that resulted from former owner Mike Kwarta transferring ownership to Brown — and much of the front office leaving in the process.
Players were told they’d be paid this week, but the issue coincided with a number of the team’s star players being suspended after an incident on the team bus following the game in Greensboro, N.C.
Quarterback Sam Castronova, wide receiver Darius Prince (the league MVP last year), defensive lineman Brandon Sesay and defensive captains Nick Haag and Melvin Hollins were the players that were suspended after Albany police were called to the team hotel following the bus incident.
It is unclear exactly what happened and the victim was not identified because the investigation is still ongoing, though police were called on suspicion of aggravated harassment.
The Albany Empire are 1-2 thus far this season.
Brown, who purchased a minority share of the team in March, took full ownership of the team in April, along with his father, Eddie Brown, who played for the Albany Firebirds — a former arena football team in the New York state capital.
Brown showed up at the team’s season opener last month and was told to “get off the field right now” by security, as he signed autographs for fans.
“This is my field. I’m the owner,” Brown responded.
So far, things are going about as well as anyone expected for an Antonio Brown-led football team.
The former NFL star has been accused of a wide variety of offenses, including but not limited to: sexual assault (he settled a rape case with his former trainer in 2021), domestic violence, failing to make child support payments and assaulting a moving truck driver.
He has been in and out of the NFL over the last several years, and famously walked off the field while a member of the Buccaneers during a game against the Jets on Jan. 2, 2022.
Tampa Bay cut him that same day and he has not played in the NFL since.
