NextImg:Anthony Volpe’s home run part of another big day for Yankees rookie

Anthony Volpe is earning his pinstripes.

The 22-year-old rookie shortstop scored twice and provided a spark for the struggling Bombers’ bats in Tuesday’s 4-2 victory over the Guardians.

In the bottom of the sixth inning with the Yankees trailing 2-0, Volpe hit his third home run of the season, a 345-foot shot to right field — rounding the bases in the flashing lights that seemed to signal the Yankees’ offense to come to life.

“Definitely, definitely a little energy boost,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the win. “Not that everyone isn’t grinding away and fighting, but obviously it’s been a little bit of a challenge, and for him to step on one the other way like that, and then we string together a couple good at-bats … just some good at-bats to get us right back in the game.”

After Volpe’s ignited a spark, Gleyber Torres doubled and Anthony Rizzo followed with a single to left, sending Torres home to tie the game.

In the next inning, Willie Calhoun hit his first home run of the season, a go-ahead line drive to right field.

“I don’t know about pressure,” Volpe said when asked about his big hit in light of the offense’s recent struggles. “I don’t necessarily know the circumstances really change anything. I try to hold myself to a high standard, and be that leadoff hitter and table setter.”

Volpe won the shortstop job during spring training and has since demonstrated his value with a slash line of .230/.336/.370 in 100 at-bats this season.

Gerrit Cole joked, “[He] tied me in career home runs.”

Nevertheless, the rookie’s talent at the plate isn’t what impresses Boone the most.

Rather, it’s his defensive skills and base-running smarts.

In the top of the eighth inning, Guardians’ second baseman Andres Gimenez bunted into a force out, as Volpe managed to get Gabriel Arias out at second base, keeping the tying run out of scoring position.

“Really good play,” Boone said. “Just one of those good, heady plays we’ve seen by Anthony throughout the start of the season.”

In the bottom of the inning, Volpe hit a line-drive single to left field then stole second and third base, and scored on a single by DJ LeMahieu for the game’s final run.

Volpe is 10-for-10 on stolen bases this season.

“He’s a special base runner. … The level of base runner that he is, he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen,” Boone said. “He’s probably a better defender than I would have even thought. He’s so aware out there.”
