HOUSTON — Aaron Boone had been wanting to get Jon Berti in the lineup, he just didn’t want this to be the reason why.
Anthony Volpe was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with an upset stomach, the team said, as the Yankees tried to go for a sweep of the Astros at Minute Maid Park.
The shortstop has gotten off to a strong start to the season, batting 4-for-10 with four walks and a 1.371 OPS, including smashing his first home run on Saturday night.
Volpe, who was one of six Yankees on the Opening Day roster to make the trip to Mexico City earlier this week at the end of camp, was replaced in the lineup by Berti, who started at third base.
At least a few members of the Yankees’ traveling party that went to Mexico have been dealing with gastrointestinal issues since then, though it was not clear whether Volpe’s illness on Sunday was related to that.
The red-hot Oswaldo Cabrera shifted from third base to shortstop.

The Yankees had planned to get Berti, acquired from the Marlins on Wednesday, into a game before Sunday but Cabrera’s blazing start altered those plans.
“I told Jon this today, nobody wanted him here more than me,” Boone said before Volpe was scratched and Berti vaulted into the lineup. “I pushed everyone, ‘Hey, we need to go get him, I know what he’s going to be to this team on the long haul.’ I know that’s the case. He’s going to play a huge role for us this year. I want to get him in there and eventually we will.”
Sooner than he expected, it turns out.
