ANAHEIM, Calif. — No matter what Anthony Volpe does, he seems to frustrate a certain portion of the Yankees fan base.

Perhaps that is because he is not Derek Jeter. Or on more equal footing, he has not become a star as quickly as Bobby Witt Jr. or Gunnar Henderson, other shortstops in his own draft class.

But somewhat quietly, the 24-year-old has settled into a solid stretch early in Year 3, offering some promise of the kind of consistency he has largely been missing during his time with the Yankees.

Entering Tuesday, Volpe was batting .244 with a .763 OPS and 115 WRC+ — 15 percent better than league average in the metric that measures run creation adjusted for external factors — while reaching base in 42 of his 52 games. In his past 27 games, he had hit .284 (29-for-102) with a .838 OPS, one of the longer stretches of his career with that kind of sustained production.
