A season of confusion continues for the Angels.
Anthony Rendon hasn’t played a game since July 4.
He was asked for an update just last week and — after years of answering questions publicly in English — said he doesn’t know English.
“No habla inglés today,” Rendon had said, according to Sam Blum of The Athletic, who reported that Rendon then left the team’s clubhouse in a hoodie.
Now, the third baseman has come out and said he’s had a fractured tibia, discovering the news a few weeks ago, and questioned why this was never announced by the Angels.
“You gotta ask them,” he reportedly replied when asked why the Angels haven’t confirmed what Rendon is alleging in reference to his injury status.
Rendon hasn’t meaningfully updated the media on his status during the past couple months.
Angels manager Phil Nevin hasn’t indicated that anything’s been new with Rendon either.
“It depends on which day you ask him,” he told reporters reported on Aug. 22. “It comes and goes each day.”
Rendon, 33, signed a seven-year, $245 million deal to join the Angels prior to the 2020 season, and is under contract with the club until the 2027 season.
Rendon hasn’t yet reclaimed the success with the Angels that he had with the Nationals prior to leaving the team after being a core piece of their 2019 World Series title team, his only All-Star season.
The Texas native not only has seen his production drop since switching teams, but his run in Los Angeles has been wildly marred by injury.
Rendon has yet to play more than 58 games in a season with the Angels, including the 60-game 2020 season, in which he played 52.
He has since logged 58, 47 and 43 appearances.
He’s hitting .236 this season, the second-lowest of mark of his career.
