Anne Hathaway is set to return for a Princess Diaries 3 threequel alongside Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon helmer Adele Lim, who will direct.

The film will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who created the film franchise starring Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary-teen-turned-queen of the fictional kingdom of Genovia.

Julie Andrews also starred in the original film as Thermopolis’ grandmother but has not yet confirmed if she will be returning.

Hathaway will also produce under her Somewhere Pictures banner. Naia Cucukov will executive produce the film alongside Melissa Stack. Flora Greeson will pen the script.

Hathaway shared her excitement and confirmed her return by posting Variety’s announcement with a video reciting the iconic Princess Diaries quote, “Shut up!”

“As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” said Lim in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

Princess Diaries 3 has been in development since 2022 and, last year, Hathaway shared an update about the film’s progress in an interview with V Magazine. “We’re in a good place,” Hathaway teased. “There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

Although plot details haven’t been confirmed, the threequel is expected to pick up where the story left off in 2001’s The Princess Diaries and the 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Lim made her directorial debut in 2023 with the Lionsgate movie Joy Ride, starring Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Sabrina Wu, and Stephanie Hsu. Her production company 100 Tigers operates with a mission to “foster and empower artists and projects that share our passion for female-forward, cross-cultural stories with global appeal and a glossy edge.”
