Anne Hathaway is catching some flak for her newly announced role.
Deadline broke the news on Wednesday (Nov. 20) that The Princess Diaries alum has been cast in Verity, the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover‘s romantic thriller novel of the same name. According to the outlet, Hathaway will be playing the film’s titular role, Verity Crawford.
However, some fans of Hathaway’s were not necessarily receptive to her booking this buzzy role, with one claiming she does “not need to stoop to these levels.”
Another deemed Hathaway “horrible casting” for the part.
One critic even took a hit at Hathaway’s recent turn in The Idea of You, writing, “anne hathaway’s path from being a[n] oscar winner to making movies made from books by horrible authors needs to be studied.”
As reported by Deadline, The Idea of You‘s director, Michael Showalter, is attached to direct Verity as well.
Back in August, Hoover stopped by Watch What Happens Live and teased that they were “in the thick of beginning this process” of casting the film.
“Well, I just read the script. I’m super excited about it,” she shared at the time.
Nonetheless, some fans have shared their excitement with respect to Hathaway’s casting, insisting that she is “going to nail it.”
“I’m very much tuned in for anne hathaway in verity I’m so sorry #guilty,” another admitted.
It Ends With Us, another of Hoover’s film adaptations that hit theaters this summer, was the subject of vast drama involving co-stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, the latter of whom also directed the film. The movie was plagued by accusations of a tense relationship between Lively and Baldoni, with the actress getting plenty of flack as people dredged up old video clips and interviews of hers.
Verity is about Lowen Ashleigh, “a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime,” per the book’s synopsis. After Verity’s husband Jeremy hires her to “complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish,” se discovers all sorts of secrets in “an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read.”
