That’s not how the Los Angeles Angels wanted their ninth inning to go.
The Angels led the Detroit Tigers by two runs with two on and two outs in the ninth inning Tuesday night when closer Carlos Estevez induced a long fly ball to center from Spencer Torkelson that looked like it would end the game.
But Angels center fielder Mickey Moniak did his best impersonation of a little leaguerr, losing track of the ball before it bounced in front of him and ultimately over the wall for a game-tying ground-rule double that tied the game in one of the more embarrassing ways possible.
Fortunately for Moniak, who is having an outstanding breakout year — the outfielder owns a .978 OPS and 11 homers in 48 games — the 25 year old received a chance to make things right. He slapped an RBI double to right field in the 10th that gave the Angels a 7-6 lead that stood up.

Moniak, the No. 1 pick by the Phillies in the 2016 MLB Draft, struggled mightily in his big league opportunities prior to this season.
He hit just .157 with four homers spanning 66 games from 2020-22. The Angels then acquired Moniak from the Phillies last year for rental starter Noah Syndergaard.
That trade has worked out quite well for Los Angeles.

The Angels (52-49) are enjoying another otherworldly season from Shohei Ohtani, who has 36 homers and a 3.71 ERA, but are 3 1/2 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays for the third wild card spot and 6 1/2 games behind the AL-West leading Texas Rangers.
Rumors about a potential Ohtani trade, given that the two-way sensation is a free agent after this season, have proliferated as the Aug. 1 trade deadline looms.
