Angel Cabrera’s polarizing return to the Masters lasted only two rounds.
The 2009 champion will not contend for a second green jacket this weekend after shooting an 8-over 80 on Friday to bring his two-day total to an 11-over par. He posted a 3-over 75 in Thursday’s opening round.
Cabrera’s arrival at Augusta National this week came two years after he was released from prison for assault against ex-partners. He served a 30-month sentence in his native Argentina.
The two-time major winner expanded on second chances Tuesday when discussing what warranted his return to the field.
“Life has given me another opportunity,” he said. “I’ve got to take advantage of that and do the right things in this second opportunity. Obviously, I regret things that happened, and you learn from them.”
Cabrera, 55, later attended the Masters Champions Dinner on Tuesday evening that honored 2024 victor Scottie Scheffler.
“It was a quiet dinner — quieter than normal,” Tommy Aaron, the 1973 Masters champion, told Golfweek of the gathering.
Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods skipped Tuesday’s dinner as he continues to recover from an Achilles injury sustained earlier this year.
He last won at Augusta in 2019.
Englishman Justin Rose led the field Friday with an 8-under par through his second round.
Rory McIlroy, who had a disastrous finish Thursday with two double bogeys in the final four holes, powered his way back into the top three after shooting a bogey-free 66 in Friday’s second round.
The Masters will conclude on Sunday.
