NextImg:Andrew Cuomo says Biden ‘terribly mismanaged’ border crisis

Ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo ripped President Biden on Sunday for the “real debacle” at the border, saying the White House “terribly mismanaged” the situation and that the crisis will only deepen.

The Democratic gov claimed the Dem prez’s approach is wreaking more havoc than GOP former President Donald Trump’s policy, “which was a more controlled border.

“This is just mayhem,” New York’s former top pol said of the US-Mexico border mess, which is crippling New York City and other US urban centers with its flood of migrants.

“Before you invite everyone into the country, you have to know that you have the resources to handle it, ” Cuomo told radio host John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM’s “Cats Roundtable” show.

“There was no plan as to what to do with the people who you would let in. ‘Welcome everyone!’ OK! But you need room at the inn. Where are they going to stay? Who’s going to pay?” Cuomo said — as the Big Apple is facing an estimated $4.3 billion price tag through next spring to handle the border influx and controversially bussing overflow to towns upstate.

“It’s gotten to a point where it overwhelms cities all across the country,” Cuomo said of the influx of migrants. “What is happening on the southern border is a real debacle. It’s going to get worse before it gets better.

“It’s terribly managed,” he added.

The former governor — who resigned over sexual harassment and misconduct accusations that he denied — said migrants from Central America swarmed the US southern border even more when they heard that Biden would reverse former President Trump’s stricter border policies.

On Thursday, Biden let expire the Trump-era Title 42 health emergency order that allowed border-patrol officers to turn back migrants during the three-year COVID-19 pandemic.

“I spoke to migrants who are in New York City now [who took a] three-month trip from El Salvador when they heard President Biden was going to open the border,” Cuomo said.

Title 42 “was the only thing holding the floodgates back,” the ex-gov said.

“What’s happening to New York City and Mayor Eric Adams is one of the major problems that the mayor has, which is really bizarre, since immigration is not his problem. It’s President Biden’s problem. It’s Governor Hochul’s problem. But it’s not [Adams’] problem,” Cuomo said.

“But I think Mayor Adams has to do a better job of making the state take responsibility.”

Former Gov. David Paterson said separately on the same show that government officials are simply “rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

He said everyone seems to be passing the buck, busing migrants from one municipality to the next — with the Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sending them to New York City and now Mayor Adams moving them along to hotels in Orange and Westchester counties.

“I just find that to be profoundly revealing of how we’ve lost our sense of judgment … I don’t think that any of these situations are going to solve any problems. Moving people from wherever to whatever else is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic,” Paterson told the “Cats Roundtable.”

Cuomo laid the problem at the doorstep of his fellow Democrats in Congress as well as the White House.

“We have this air of defeatism: ‘Oh, it’s beyond us.’ … This issue — this is President Biden. This is the Democrats in the Senate and the House. They can change a policy where the flow of people coming in meets our ability to provide the resources,” he said.

He said his former lieutenant governor and successor, Gov. Kathy Hochul, has to step up her game, along with Democrats who run the state Legislature..

“Mayor Adams, call up Governor Hochul and the Legislature, and say, ‘This is not a city problem. It’s a state problem. Come down here and pick up these people and disperse them across the state.’

“This is a doable issue. We’re not trying to cure cancer here in a week,” Cuomo said.

It’s not the first time Cuomo criticized Biden’s border policy. He attacked the president’s handling of the border as well as the commander-in-chief’s response to the Chinese spy balloon that floated across the mainland in his “Matter of Fact” podcast.

Biden conceded last week that the migrant surge at the southern border will be “chaotic for a while” after the Title 42 border policy ended.

Cuomo resigned in disgrace under the threat of impeachment in August 2021 after a slew of women accused him of harassment and sexual misconduct, claims outlined in a withering investigative report issued by state Attorney General Letitia James’ office. Cuomo insisted he did nothing wrong, but James said she believed the accusations.
