Andor creator Tony Gilroy is stepping away from his show after coming under fire for continuing to work on the Disney+ series amidst the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Gilroy is “no longer performing any non-writing duties” for the show after sources told Variety on Friday (May 5) that the showrunner was still “working as a producer on specific, non-writing elements like casting and scoring” for Andor.
Gilroy told THR he hasn’t been on the Andor set since the WGA strike kicked off earlier this month on May 2.
In a statement shared with the outlet, he said, “I discontinued all writing and writing-related work on Andor prior to midnight, May 1. After being briefed on the Saturday showrunner meeting, I informed Chris Keyser at the WGA on Sunday morning that I would also be ceasing all non-writing producing functions.”
Keyser is the co-chair of the WGA’s negotiating committee.
Gilroy caught flack for allegedly continuing to work on his series during the strike, and was scolded on Instagram by writer Abdullah Saeed, who called to remove Gilroy from WGA over his actions.
“This is scabbing. There’s no way a writer/producer can ‘finish’ writing and begin solely producing,” Saeed wrote in a Tuesday (May 9) post. “And if the scripts truly are finished, let’s see em. If there’s one word different in the finished product, kick Tony Gilroy out of the WGA.”

Andor first premiered on Disney+ in September and earned favorable reviews from Star Wars fans and casual viewers alike. The show was renewed for a second and final season, which is expected to debut in August 2024.
Decider’s Joel Keller wrote in his Andor review, “Andor is a dark, morally cloudy slow burn of a series. If it wasn’t part of the Star Wars canon, it would make a good noir adventure on its own. But it certainly is a welcome departure from the usual fare in the franchise.
Andor Season 1 is now streaming on Disney+.
