In And Just Like That… Season 2 Episode 9 “There Goes the Neighborhood,” Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) continues to rush full throttle into her rekindled relationship with ex-fiancé Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) and finds herself face-to-face with his ex-wife. We’ve known about Aidan’s wife Kathy since the Sex and the City Season 6 premiere “To Market, To Market” — i.e. the episode where Carrie runs into Aidan and his infant son Tate while trying to escape running into her crush Jack Berger (Ron Livingston) — but this marks the first time we’ve ever met her. In And Just Like That... on Max, Kathy is played by none other than Rosemarie DeWitt, who ironically has quite the meta connection to Kathy’s first canonical “appearance” as well as a literal connection to Sex and the City Season 6.

More importantly, Kathy might be the one character on And Just Like That… who is speaking for a wide swath of the show’s audience. She asks Carrie to meet her for a quick coffee, which seems totally normal, and then warns Carrie not to break Aidan’s heart again. Even though Aidan acts like Kathy crossed a line by telling Carrie this, I personally thought the former Mrs. Shaw was totally within her rights to “meddle” in this super-speedy romance. Carrie does have a history of emotionally devastating Aidan and, to Kathy’s point, there are three children now who will have to deal with any potential future fallout. Kathy wasn’t acting out of spite or jealousy, but concern for all four of her boys. (Yes, I include Aidan in that grouping.)

But enough about how I think Kathy is the only sane person in this situation! Let’s talk about who And Just Like That… tapped to play the furniture designer Aidan married and had three sons with. If Rosemarie DeWitt looks familiar, that’s because you’ve probably seen her before on Mad Men, Black Mirror, or the original Sex and the City. Here’s everything you need to know about Rosemarie DeWitt and why it’s kind of wild And Just Like That... tapped her to play Aidan’s ex…

Who plays Aidan’s ex-wife on And Just Like That…? That would be Rosemarie DeWitt.

The 51-year-old American actress was educated at Hofstra University and saw her star rise in the late ’00s when she co-starred opposite Anne Hathaway in the Oscar-nominated indie Rachel Getting Married and later appeared in Mad Men. DeWitt played Midge Daniels, Don Draper’s bohemian artist mistress, on the hit AMC show. Since then, DeWitt has appeared in shows like The United States of Tara, Little Fires Everywhere, and The Staircase. You might have also seen DeWitt in movies like Your Sister’s Sister, La La Land, and Sweet Virginia.

Of course, if you are a Sex and the City fanatic, you might also remember Rosemarie DeWitt from a certain Season 6 episode…

While we never ever met Kathy on Sex and the City, we did see Rosemarie DeWitt pop up for one scene in one Season 6 episode.

Rosemarie DeWitt played Fern, a catty attorney at Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) law firm, in Sex and the City Season 6 Episode 6 “Hop, Skip, and a Week.” When Miranda is question by her boss about her work ethic after the birth of Brady, Fern throws the new mom under the bus. She offers up multiple examples of Miranda arriving late to work or leaving the office early. For Miranda, this is a moot point as she’s able to keep on top of her cases. We never see Fern again.

It’s kind of funny that DeWitt appeared in Sex and the City Season 6 Episode 6 “Hop, Skip, and a Week,” though. That episode is best known for two major developments: Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Harry’s (Evan Handler) engagement and Berger breaking up with Carrie via Post-it note. Why is that? Well, uh, because Rosemarie DeWitt is married to the guy who played Jack Berger in real life…

YES! Rosemarie DeWitt and Ron Livingston have been married since 2009. The two apparently didn’t meet on Sex and the City Season 6, but on their 2006-2007 show Standoff. They have two daughters and seem to be going strong.

Still, it’s very ironic that when Carrie first learns about Kathy in the Sex and the City Season 6 premiere, she is trying to avoid Ron Livingston’s Berger. It’s all connected! Life! Love! The apparently shallow New York City-based casting pool of Gen X actors!
