America’s Got Talent: Extreme contestant Jonathan Goodwin has filed a lawsuit claiming the show’s lack of safety protocols led to the “catastrophic” incident that left him paralyzed and severely injured in October 2021.
The lawsuit alleges the producers “pushed the talent,” including Goodwin, “to perform ‘extreme’ stunts for the show,” per Deadline. It also accuses the defendants of interfering with the safety of the stunts “by creating an illusion of safety” while they “failed to develop and comply with property safety policies… for this type of production.”
NBCUniversal, Fremantle Productions, Syco Entertainment, and AGT: Extreme stunt coordinator Terrance James White are listed as the defendants.
The lawsuit points to a specific incident that occurred in 2021 when production was taking place at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Georgia. Per Deadline, Goodwin had to remove a straightjacket while being suspended 20-40 feet in the air before two cars collided head-on.
According to the lawsuit, he “was crushed and burned by two exploding motor vehicles, and was further injured when he fell approximately 20-40 feet and violently struck the ground.” He suffered a variety of injuries after the incident, including a spinal injury that left him a paraplegic.
“Because of Defendants’ conscious disregard for the safety of otehrs and for their gross, wanton and reckless breaches, [Goodwin] suffered catastrophic, life-altering injuries,” the lawsuit reads.

The defendants are accused of “designing and modifying a stunt in a manner that made it highly likely to fail” and failing to implement “adequate safeguards” to prevent injuries, amongst a list of other things.
Goodwin shared a post on social media after the incident.
“A couple of days ago my life took a complete left turn… and the out pouring of love from all the corners of the world; from people I didn’t even think would know or remember me… has just been astonishing,” he wrote in October 2021.
He added, “I have been to the very brink and dodged the worst that a human being can, without fear…because I was protected by love.”
The escapologist had previously appeared on Britain’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent.
In a statement, per BBC, Goodwin’s lawyer Stuart Fraenkel compared the incident the fatal shooting that occurred on the set of Rust in 2021.
“He hopes that by bringing this claim, lessons will be learned, changes will be made and others in the future will not be exposed to unnecessary risks and danger,” the statement reads.
AGT: Extreme lasted just four episodes after it premiered in 2022.
