The recently announced documentary about Melania Trump is reportedly costing Amazon a pretty penny.
Citing three sources familiar with the agreement, Matthew Belloni wrote in the latest issue of his Puck newsletter that Amazon Prime is coughing up $40 million for the doc’s licensing rights, reportedly outbidding both Disney and Paramount. Meanwhile, Apple and Netflix reportedly did not bid on the project.
According to Puck, the cost includes both the documentary and a “previously undisclosed two-to-three-episode follow-up docuseries” about Donald Trump‘s wife, both of which the incoming first lady will “participate” in.
Belloni hinted that Melania will be seeing a sizable portion of Amazon’s $40 million figure. He noted in his newsletter, “It’s unclear how much the first lady is personally being paid to participate and ‘produce’ this project while her husband is in office, but I’m betting it’s a big chunk of that $40 million.”
As noted in a statement from Amazon released on Sunday (Jan. 5), the first lady is executive producing the documentary with Fernando Sulichin, with Brett Ratner attached to direct. Ratner has largely left Hollywood after being accused of sexual harassment by multiple women at the height of the MeToo movement in 2017. He has denied all accusations.
Belloni’s newsletter mentions that Ratner “maintains a bunch of ties to Trumpworld figures,” including Steven Mnuchin, who worked with Ratner at his RatPac-Dune Entertainment before selling his stake.
The Melania project, which Amazon is licensing for both a limited theatrical and streaming releases, has “an anticipated release in the second half of 2025.” Puck reports that this deal does not grant Amazon ownership, but a limited license.
The news of the sale comes not long after The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos would be making a $1 million donation to Trump’s inauguration fund.
Bezos, who is also owner of The Washington Post and who recently joined Trump and Elon Musk for dinner at Mar-a-Lago, spoke at The New York Times‘ Dealbook Summit in early December, during which he said he was “very optimistic this time around” about the president elect’s second term, per CNN.
