NextImg:'All of You' ending explained: Do Simon and Laura end up together?

If you thought Brett Goldstein was swoon-worthy as Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, just wait til you see him in All of You, the new sci-fi romance movie that began streaming on Apple TV+ today.

Directed by William Bridges, who also co-wrote the script with Goldstein, All of You has been a passion project for Goldstein (who also produced the film) for the last decade or so. The film takes place sometime in the near future where a process known as “The Test” can definitively find anyone’s one, true soulmate. Goldstein’s character, Simon, is very much against The Test, but he still gallantly pays for his best friend Laura (played by Imogen Poots) to take it.

Also starring Zawe Ashton, Steven Cree, and Jenna Coleman, All of You first premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival to mostly positive reviews from critics. Now, over a year later, the film is finally being released via Apple TV+. Goldstein fans have been waiting for this one! But All of You might not be the film you’re expecting. If you found yourself lost or confused while watching—or if you just want to skip to the end—don’t worry. Decider is here to help. Read on for a breakdown of the All of You plot summary and All of You ending explained, including if Simon and Laura end up together in All of You.

Simon (Brett Goldstein) and Laura (Imogen Poots) are platonic best friends, even though it’s clear there is something more there. Luckily (or unluckily) for them, they live in a world where it’s possible to scientifically determine your soulmate via a test. Laura decides to take it, and Simon agrees to help her pay for it. Simon is super against The Test, convinced Laura will abandon him for her new soulmate. Laura promises they will still hang out all the time. As Laura walks away to take The Test, Simon playfully tells her that he’s going to miss her every single day.

Spoiler alert: Laura’s soulmate is not Simon, it’s some random guy named Lukas (Steven Cree). We learn that Laura doesn’t feel super attracted to Steve, but learns to love him for being a safe, reliable husband who adores her. She stays with him, and they have a child together. But she also stays close friends with Simon, who is obviously in love with Laura. Years pass. Simon’s girlfriend Andrea (Zawe Ashton) dumps him because she realizes he’s in love with Laura.

The sexual tension finally reaches it’s breaking point when Laura’s dad dies. Feeling emotionally vulnerable at the funeral, Laura asks Simon if he paid for her Test because he thought he would be her soulmate. Simon tells her no, and leaves. But later, Laura shows up at his apartment and they have sex. After, Laura runs off without saying a word, and ignores Simon’s messages. When she finally agrees to meet with him, she accuses him of taking advantage of her. But she can’t seem to resist running back into his arms.

Simon and Laura begin to have an affair behind Lukas’s back. This goes on for years, with the two of them sneaking away to remote weekends away together. Laura tells Lukas she is going on work trips. Laura makes clear to Simon she will not leave Lukas and their daughter, and Simon promises not to ask her to do that. Simon has a strained conversation with Lukas in which Lukas urges Simon to come back into their lives to be Laura’s friend, revealing he is none the wiser about the affair.

Eventually, Simon realizes that stealing moments away with Laura is not enough for him anymore, and he does ask Laura to leave Lukas. Laura refuses, and suggests Simon should also take The Test to find his soulmate (so he can cheat on his soulmate, too, I guess?). Simon responds that he knows Laura is his soulmate, with or without The Test, and walks out, ending the affair. More years pass, and Simon tries to move on from Laura. But when they run into each other again at a book reading, he confesses to her that he doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to love anyone else but Laura. He also reveals he’s moving to California for a work opportunity.

No, Simon and Laura do not end up together in the end in All of You. After they reunite at the book reading, they steal away for one last torrid weekend affair. During this weekend, Simon reveals he will always regret not telling Laura that he loved her before she took The Test. When the weekend is over, Laura suggests that she could go with Simon to California, but Simon can tell that she doesn’t really mean it. They imagine a fantasy life together of sex, drugs and hedonism, but they know it’s not real.

In their last scene together, Laura asks Simon if she has prevented him from finding true happiness all of these years. Simon replies that the few stolen moments he’s had with Laura have been the highlights of his life, and Laura replies they have been for her, too. As Laura walks away to catch her cab, Simon says the same thing to her that he said when she took The Test all those years ago: “I’ll miss you, every single day.”

Laura gets in the car and drives away. She doesn’t turn back, and Simon doesn’t go after her. They both wipe away their tears, and seem to accept that this part of their lives —this relationship—is over.

So what does it all mean? What was the point? I can offer my interpretation: All of You is a love story about how sometimes, true love isn’t enough to conquer all. Your timing, your choices—like Simon’s choice to pay for Laura’s Test without telling her how he felt—can and do irrevocably shape the path of your life. You can’t undo what has been done, and sometimes, yes, it is too late. For Simon and Laura, it was too late. It took them many years to accept that truth, but at the end of the movie, they finally do.

But that’s just my take on the film. If you have a different interpretation, let me know in the comments.
