Alex Wolff got a taste of college life while filming his upcoming movie, The Line, which follows a devoted fraternity brother who slowly begins to open his eyes to the establishment’s toxic hazing traditions after he meets a girl outside his social circle.
Wolff, who rose to fame as a child actor in Nickelodeon’s Naked Brothers Band, appeared on this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, where he revealed that he spent a week living with a fraternity to prepare him for his role.
“I lived [there] for a week and they hazed me and it was kind of like I went to the moon,” Wolff recalled. “Because I grew up in the city and it was a very liberal, inclusive place. And when I went to [the fraternity] it was kind of a culture shock.”
While the experience was very much out of his comfort zone, the actor learned something from his time slumming it with the frat brothers.
“Seeing them up close, I realized that they’re all babies pretending to be these strong, masculine — it just had an antiquated feeling to it. Like, something was wrong,” Wolff said, before adding, “It got me very inspired to make this movie and go all out in showing how this happens.”
The film’s director and co-writer Ethan Berger previously opened up about Wolff’s preparation tactic, revealing that many of the extras in the movie were brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) at the University of South Carolina.

“Alex Wolff is a Method actor, and he wanted to go to the frat to get a sense of what life was like there,” Berger said in a June 2023 interview with IndieWire. “All these kids there started talking to me and they understood what my intentions were and that I am not a fan of Greek life, and they chose to participate in the movie anyway, which says something.”
The Line, which will premiere in theaters on Friday, Oct. 18, also stars Angus Cloud, Austin Abrams and Halle Bailey.
