Alec Baldwin‘s involuntary manslaughter trial may have been what launched Rust into the spotlight in the first place, but the public finally has a first look at the upcoming western, which is being released this spring.

Per People, who exclusively shared the film’s trailer today, Baldwin stars in the movie as an outlaw named Harland Rust. Set in Kansas in the 1880s, the film follows him as he escapes hiding in order to rescue his grandson and orphan Lucas McCallister (Patrick Scott McDermott), who has been sentenced to be hanged after accidentally killing a rancher.

After breaking him out of jail, Harland and his grandson head toward Mexico, but “must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named Preacher (Travis Fimmel),” per Variety.

While shooting Rust in October 2021, Baldwin’s prop gun discharged, killing 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. While the case against Baldwin was thrown out in July 2024, the film’s 26-year-old armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Hutchins’ death also resulted in the Hulu documentary Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna, directed by her friend Rachel Mason. In an interview with DECIDER, Mason said that the doc “shifted from the story of Halyna, to the story of Rust, because that is what people needed to have answers for.”

“We really had to reconcile: How do we make both things happen, and not lose Halyna in it?” she added.

She also shared that they had reached out to Baldwin about the documentary, and they “became aware that he’s doing his own projects. So it was impossible for him to work with us.”

One project of Baldwin’s is his TLC reality series The Baldwins, which debuted on the network in February. The show’s trailer put the Rust shooting front and center, as Baldwin was reportedly filming while navigating the trial.

Rust hits select theaters and VOD on May 2. Watch the trailer above.
