Three decades ago, when actor Adam Scott was just kicking off his on-screen career, he guest starred as a patient on a little show called ER.
Since Scott’s Apple TV+ thriller, Severance, and Noah Wyle’s MAX medical drama, The Pitt, are currently two of 2025’s most acclaimed series, a clip of the leading men sharing the screen in a 1995 ER episode has been making the rounds on social media. So naturally, when Decider met up with Scott on the red carpet at Severance‘s Season 2 FYC event on April 5, we asked him to reflect on his ER experience with us.
“Really? Really?! No way!” the Severance star excitedly said after learning his ER episode (Season 1, Episode 20, “Full Moon, Saturday Night”) was having a moment on social media. Scott quickly recalled the name of his 18-year-old character who was stitched up after a crash, saying, “David Kerstetter. I don’t know why I remember that, but I just did.”
So what else does Scott remember about the scenes shared with Wyle (John Carter), Ming-Na Wen (Jing-Mei Chen), and Sherry Stringfield (Susan Lewis)? Apparently he made a major mistake while filming, which may or may not haunt him to this day.
Before Scott’s character David questions Dr. Carter’s stitching technique in the clip that recently went viral, Scott said, “There was a long take of me being wheeled in through the entire ER as Noah Wyle and [Sherry Stringfield] have dialog above me.”
“It’s this long take, right? And we went through the whole thing. They got their lines perfect. Everything was great. Except I had taken my breathing thing out of my nose and had forgotten to put it back in,” he explained. In an effort to correct the mistake, Scott said, “I raised my hand and said something about it. And I was brand new. It was one of my first jobs. And somebody told me that I really, really fucked up.”
Everything clearly worked out in the end. Scott’s ER episode looks great! He went on to star in more than 100 TV series and films! And Severance is a major Emmys contender. But as a budding actor, Scott admitted, “I was so scared. I didn’t know what was gonna to happen to me.” The mishap felt so severe that Scott even joked, “I thought I may get the death penalty, which is really scary.”
While we might not see Scott as a patient on The Pitt, the Severance star did give Wyle’s intense new medical series, created by R. Scott Gemmill, some high praise, saying, “It’s a really good show.” So here’s hoping we’ll get an ER reunion between Scott and Wyle during awards season.
Severance Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+. And The Pitt Season 1 finale premieres Thursday, April 10 on MAX.
