Adam Sandler has been known to pull from a familiar cast of characters for his Happy Madison films (Kevin James, Rob Schneider, and Steve Buscemi immediately come to mind). This time, he’s shining the spotlight on his family in You Are So not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah!, which begins streaming on Netflix on Aug. 25.
The trailer just dropped for the film, which is based on Fiona Rosenbloom’s novel of the same name that graced many young Jewish girls’ bookshelves growing up (myself included).
The film follows middle schooler Stacy and her BFF Lydia as they both prepare for their upcoming bat mitzvahs. When Stacy discovers that Lydia has been canoodling with her crush Andy Goldfarb, she drops her as a friend and, as the title implies, uninvites her from her bat mitzvah.
Sandler’s daughter Sunny (14) stars as Stacy, and his eldest daughter Sadie (17), plays her sister Ronnie. His wife Jackie Sandler appears in the film as Lydia’s mother, as well. Sandler plays Lydia’s father, alongside his wife Bree (Idina Menzel), who was his co-star in Uncut Gems.
While this is not the first time that his daughters have been featured in his films, this is the first time that one of them is taking on a lead role.
The trailer also features Samantha Lorraine as Lydia, Sarah Sherman as Stacy’s rabbi, and Dylan Hoffman as Andy Goldfarb.
According to Variety, the cast also includes Luis Guzmán (Wednesday), Ido Mosseri (You Don’t Mess with the Zohan), Dean Scott Vasquez (Theater Camp), and more.
