A Small Light actress Bel Powley revealed a senior crew member once touched her “inappropriately” while working on a production in her early twenties.

“I’ve had someone grab my arse and basically touch me inappropriately before,” she said. “I was too scared to say anything. I was too scared to rock the boat.”

Speaking to The Independent, the actress credited the #MeToo movement with changing the industry’s standards on inappropriate workplace conduct.

“I just avoided that person and it was fine, but what really has changed post-MeToo is you just know that you’re protected,” she said.

“At the beginning of MeToo it was weird. For a while it was like, I feel protected because men are just fucking scared, which was fine too, but now everything’s settled into itself,” she explained. “People have learned and it’s like there’s a new code of conduct.”

The actress did not specify who the “senior crew member” was or during which production it occurred.

She also spoke on her positive experience filming The Diary of a Teenage Girl, in which she starred opposite Alexander Skarsgard and Kristen Wiig. Powley explained she’d had a number of “awkward” experiences filming intimacy scenes for indie films prior to that movie that were more “low budget” and “guerilla-style filming.”

“I did have a couple of bad ones where everyone’s too awkward to ask if you’re gonna take your clothes off, and you don’t have it written up properly in the contract,” she told The Independent.

“You just find yourself doing it because you’re too scared to say no, with a young actor who probably felt just as uncomfortable,” she later explained.

Powley recently starred in A Small Light, a National Geographic series that tells the true story of Miep Gies, the woman who helped hide Anne Frank and her family during World War II.

A Small Light is now streaming on Hulu, Disney+, and National Geographic.
