Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has yet to make his Jets debut but he’s already wearing another hat for the franchise: coach.
Ahead of Tuesday’s highly-anticipated premiere of “Hard Knocks,” NFL Films released a new preview Monday featuring Rodgers on the Jets’ sideline during last week’s Hall of Fame Game against the Browns, in which he called for backup quarterback Zach Wilson to toss the ball to wide receiver Malik Taylor.
“Throw it up to Malik. Touchdown,” Rodgers said on the headset prior to the play.
Just after the ball was snapped, Rodgers could be seen watching as Taylor hauled in a 57-yard completion from Wilson.
The four-time league MVP then celebrated on the sidelines.
“Yeah, Malik!” Rodgers exclaimed.
Wilson, who is entering his third year in New York, later praised Rodgers for the call.
“Great call by Aaron Rodgers,” Wilson told reporters with a big smile after the game. “Had to give him a little shout out there.”
Wilson ended his night by completing three of five attempts for 65 yards.
Despite the impressive pass from Wilson, the Jets dropped their preseason opener with a 21-16 loss to the Browns.
Head coach Robert Saleh took a moment after the game to praise Wilson, the team’s second-overall pick in 2021.
“Zach did a good job,” Saleh said. “He was poised. He looked comfortable in the pocket and delivered the ball on schedule. It was definitely something to build on.”
Wilson adapting to his new role as QB2 will likely be featured in the upcoming season of “Hard Knocks,” the HBO docuseries that spotlights NFL teams in the offseason.
Rodgers is entering the second chapter of his storied NFL career following 18 seasons with the Packers.
He was traded to the Jets in April in a franchise-altering blockbuster.
“Hard Knocks” premieres Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
