NextImg:Aaron Boone sticks with Luis Severino in Yankees’ rotation — for now

Luis Severino survived again.

The righty will remain in the Yankees rotation after his stuff (if not his results) improved in his most recent outing.

He will make his scheduled start Wednesday, remaining in the rotation for at least one more turn, even as Carlos Rodon is set to come off the injured list early next week.

Severino had a good fastball, missed plenty of bats and struck out the side in the third inning of the 5-0 loss Tuesday in Atlanta.

But he also allowed five runs (three earned) — on home runs from Marcell Ozuna and Ronald Acuña Jr. — in four innings, which actually lowered his ERA to 7.98 in 15 games.

The Yankees liked the steps they saw from the struggling 29-year-old.

“I do feel like his last outing, even though obviously he gave up some runs and a couple of long balls, was in a lot of ways the best version of Sevy we’ve seen in a long time,” manager Aaron Boone said Friday before the Yankees lost, 8-3, to the Red Sox in The Bronx. “So hoping that he had a little bit of a breakthrough there, with how he was throwing the ball, and we’ll continue to obviously watch it closely.”

Severino will start Wednesday against the Nationals, following Rodon’s return Tuesday against Washington.

The injured lefty has continued to throw despite his hamstring strain, which he has hoped would enable him to keep his arm stretched out.

The rotation has been led by Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt, while Jhony Brito received the start Friday. Randy Vasquez was optioned on Thursday.

The Yankees replaced Vasquez with Greg Weissert, who pitched two innings and allowed a run Friday.

The righty reliever had allowed one run on three hits and three walks in his previous eight innings with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

DJ LeMahieu went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

The infielder extended a season-long hitting streak to 10 games in which he is batting .371.

Keynan Middleton pitched a scoreless seventh inning in his 200th career appearance.

For the first time this year, lefty Jake Bauers was batting third, sandwiched between righties Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Boone pointed to Boston starter Brayan Bello, who had struggled against lefty batters, as the chief reason, though Bauers went 0-for-2 with a walk against Bello.

“Obviously [Bello is] having a good year, really good, becoming a really good starting pitcher, but especially tough on righties, too, with that sinker,” Boone said of Bello. “Today is a day that I just really wanted to have some balance in there.”
