Meet the new first baseman, same as the old first baseman?
That possibility presented itself Thursday when the Yankees placed first baseman Anthony Rizzo on the injured list with concussion symptoms while the Mets released slugger Luke Voit.
According to NJ.com, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked about that very scenario Thursday following the club’s 4-3 win over the Houston Astros.
“We’ll see, we’ll see,” Boone said with a smile on his face, which caused the surrounding media to chuckle.
Boone then said his demeanor wasn’t a hint at anything.
“No, no, no! You misread that answer,” Boone added.
After being asked a second time if the Yankees are interested in signing Voit, Boone tried to put the subject to rest.
“I heard he opted out, but that really is the extent of it,” Boone said.
Voit is no stranger to the Yankees.
The Bombers acquired him before the trade deadline in 2018 in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Voit quickly became a fan favorite, thanks in part to his power at the plate.

He clubbed 14 home runs in his first 39 games and followed that up with 21 homers in 2019.
During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Voit led the majors with 22 home runs.
But the next year, the Yankees traded for Rizzo ahead of the 2021 deadline, making Voit expendable.

Before the 2022 campaign, New York sent Voit to the San Diego Padres, who flipped him to the Washington Nationals months later in the Juan Soto deal.
Voit started this season with the Milwaukee Brewers, who cut ties with him in June.
That’s when the Mets entered the picture, giving him a minor-league deal.
After mashing in Triple-A Syracuse, Voit was granted his release by the organization in hopes of catching on with a new team with a chance at a call-up, according to The Post’s Mike Puma.
