BOSTON — There are no givens about the trade deadline, but the closest thing to it is that the Yankees will be acquiring at least one reliever by 6:01 p.m. on July 31.
That much is just about clockwork every summer, whether it is Mark Leiter Jr. (2024), Keynan Middleton (2023), Scott Effross and Lou Trivino (2022), Clay Holmes (2021) or beyond. No matter how the Yankees bullpen is pitching, a new reliever of some kind will likely be arriving in The Bronx by the first days of August.
This year, that will be a welcome addition. A relief corps that looked like one of the biggest strengths of the team entering the season — and still may end up being so when all is said and done — has begun to show some more cracks of late.
The Yankees woke up on Thursday morning with a 3.83 bullpen ERA, which was good for 15th in the majors. Fans have been concerned about relievers being overworked — especially in light of Luke Weaver’s hamstring injury, which came on the heels of Fernando Cruz’s shoulder inflammation — but that may be slightly overstated.
