A Minecraft Movie is releasing on video-on-demand tomorrow, much to the relief of the poor movie theater workers who have dealing with rowdy crowds. Now, at least, if kids throw popcorn in celebration of Chicken Jockey, it will be the parents’ problem.
Directed by Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess, with a team of five dudes credited with writing the script, (Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta), A Minecraft Movie is based on the popular video game of the same name, launched in 2011 by Mojang Studios. The film tells the story of four human misfits (played by Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks) who are sucked in the world of the video game, aka a wacky world where everything is built from cubes under the direction of master crafter Steve (played by Jack Black).
The movie was a box office smash hit, earning over $909 million at the worldwide box office so far, which perhaps is why Warner Bros. opted to keep A Minecraft Movie in theaters for over a month, despite the fact that many recent WB titles have been pushed to premium video-on-demand just three weeks after opening in theaters. Now Warner Bros. hopes to earn even more money from the movie with the premium digital release. A Minecraft Movie will be available to buy or rent on digital platforms on Tuesday, May 13 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday, May 12). You’ll be able to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie will cost $24.99 to buy, and $19.99 to rent. If you rent the movie, you’ll have 48 hours to view after hitting “play.”
A Minecraft Movie is not yet available on a subscription-based streaming service, but we do expect to see A Minecraft Movie streaming on Max, free to Max subscribers eventually, because A Minecraft Movie is a Warner Bros. movie, and Max is the streamer owned by Warner Bros.
The Minecraft Movie Max streaming release date on has not yet been announced yet, but we can make an educated guess based on previous releases. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, for example, was released on PVOD four-and-a-half weeks after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Max a little over three months after it was released in theaters. If A Minecraft Movie follows a similar release pattern, you may see the movie streaming on Max around early or mid-July 2025.
But that’s pure speculation. The Warner Bros. home releases have varied by title, and A Minecraft Movie had a long theatrical run than most recent WB movies, so you may have to wait a little longer. In the meantime, you can always watch A Minecraft Movie by buying or renting the movie online.
