Amazon has canceled A League of Their Own after just one season, despite previously renewing it for a four-episode final Season 2.

According to Deadline, the queer-themed reboot of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film will no longer have an abbreviated final season on Prime Video.

All four episodes were reportedly written before the Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 2 and Sony Pictures Television plans to shop the series to another platform.

The series was co-created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson, who also served as showrunners. The duo received Marshall’s blessing to make an updated take on her classic film before she died.

Graham and Jacobson reportedly fought to get the series renewed for a second season, convincing Amazon and Sony Pictures Television to negotiate a lower licensing fee. Production began in the spring but came to a halt once the WGA went on strike.

Per Amazon, the WGA/SAG strikes would have delayed Season 2 until 2025.

The series starred Jacobson, in addition to D’Arcy Carden, Chante Adams, Melanie Field and Kate Berlant. It builds on several queer and Black storylines, which were not part of the original film.

The eight-episode first season premiered last August and currently has a 94 percent rating among critics and 87 percent score with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Earlier this year, Graham challenged marketing execs at Amazon who suggested downplaying queer stories in the show’s promotional materials after data showed audiences found them off-putting. Amazon decided to drop its system of ranking shows based on audience scores since trends showed that content featuring straight, white male leads were always ranked above all others.
