Jeopardy contestant Brendan Sargent recently returned for the Champions Wildcard competition after competing on the show in Season 37. But the contestant had one urgent request to make of journalist and television personality Katie Couric, who had guest hosted his episode.

“I was lucky enough to have Katie Couric as host and she was really nice — I couldn’t ask for anything better,” he told Ken Jennings on Thursday’s (Oct. 5) episode, per TVLine.

Sargent wisely used his screen time to appeal to Couric, explaining, “But she took a selfie of the three contestants on stage and I told everyone in my life about it and… I never saw the selfie.

“So I am using this platform to urge Katie Couric to please release the selfie so people know it exists,” he said.

The request may have seemed like a long shot, but Couric responded on her own social media within hours of the episode airing.

She shared the selfie to Instagram, which showed her with the three contestants on stage.

“Hey @brendanpsargent! Ask and ye shall receive. Glad I didn’t delete it!” she wrote in the caption, followed by “#yesthishappened.”

Sargent thanked her in the comments, where he wrote, “Oh my God, I can’t believe this! Thank you so much!”

Couric was one of many guest hosts who filled in after Alex Trebek passed away in 2021, before Jennings and Mayim Bialik were named co-hosts of the game show. Couric was the first female guest host in the show’s history.

“I want people at home to see people like them in these important powerful authoritative roles,” Couric said at the time, per the Los Angeles Times. “So to be the first woman on a show that stands for excellence and intelligence and integrity is a real honor for me. For little girls everywhere, it’s cool to be smart.”

Though he got a second chance to compete on the game show during Thursday’s episode, Sargent’s good fortune ended there. He only placed second with $5,999.

Jeopardy! airs weeknights at 7/6c. Check out the website for local listings.
