And Just Like That

Right on time for summer in the city, Carrie Bradshaw and friends are back for Season 3 of And Just Like That on HBO Max!

The Sex and the City spinoff series follows Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, now in their fifties, continuing to navigate life in the big apple. When we last saw the ladies in season 2, Carrie said goodbye to her iconic apartment and put a 5 year pause on her relationship with Aidan, who said they can’t be together while his youngest son is till a teenager. Miranda amicably broke things off with non-binary comedian Che and reconciled with ex-husband Steve, giving the marriage closure. Charlotte and Harry’s relationship began a new leaf after some boundary setting on what it means to be a supportive partner– after Charlotte threw her phone in a margarita pitcher. Oh, and we got the long awaited, very brief, cameo from Samantha! Though she was the furthest away she could be from any of her friends. And who can forget Carrie’s new adopted cat “Shoe.” (We think that’s how it’s spelled anyway, and SJP actually adopted her onscreen cat IRL!) Anywho, lots going on.

As for Season 3, the review from DECIDER’s Meghan O’Keefe promises, “intoxicating, escapist television, perfect for dissociation.” Season 3 premiered on May 29, with 12 episodes total releasing over the next few weeks. If you’re between episodes and looking for more soapy (perhaps slightly cringy) messes, here are 7 more shows to stream in the meantime:

  1. HBO

For more awkward misadventures from a group of gals in New York, Lena Dunham’s Girls awaits you– albeit, the fashion in this show heavily lacks in comparison. Warning, side effects from binging may include physically recoiling into your couch from some of the… lapses in judgment from the girls in question. Hannah (Dunham) is an aspiring writer in Brooklyn with the Type A Marnie, carefree Jessa and quirky Shoshanna as friends– sometimes frenemies. The four couldn’t be more different and galavant the city trying to figure out both life, and themselves as people, facing sticky situations and sticky situationships. Now, whether you’re a Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte or Samantha, time to figure out which one of these girls you are too.

  2. Carrie Diaries

If you’re loving Sex and the City’s sequel, how about its short-lived, gone but never forgotten prequel? And who doesn’t love an origin story? Before Carrie Bradshaw was the romantically-driven writer we know her to be, she was a teenage girl from Connecticut grieving the loss of her mother, but the dazzling New York City awaits! Carries makes her way to Manhattan to intern at a law firm, and secretly begins work at Interview Magazine in the downtime. Starring Anna Sophia Robb and Austin Butler, The Carrie Diaries takes us on a journey of new love, sex and friendship.

How about a classic female friendship throwback, although one that looks at women in their 50s in a very different light. Varying in personality, four adult women, Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia, live together in a Miami house sharing laughs, triumphs and defeats– staying by each other’s side all throughout. The fashion is still stellar, only a little dated, and what a chance to marvel at how portrayals of aging on TV have changed throughout the years.

  4. KATIE STEVENS, AISHA DEE, MEGHANN FAHY in The Bold Type

In a sort of modern SATC, The Bold Type is a perfect look at sisterhood set against the glamorous background of fashion journalism in the digital age, also shedding light on social issues that are dealt with in responsible and authentic ways. Three best friends work for women’s magazine Scarlet in New York City. Jane (Katie Stevens) is the writer, Kat (Aisha Dee) is the Social Media Director and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) is a fashion assistant. Inspired by the experiences of IRL Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, the women discover their identities, and attempt to advance their careers while putting their friendship above all else.

  5. HBO

If you’re looking for another SJP led dramedy, three seasons of Divorce are waiting in the interim of AJLT episodes. With widowed and childless friends, Frances wonders what’s missing from her own life. Reevaluating her choices and relationships, she decides to divorce husband Robert (Thomas Haden Church). Created by Sharon Hogan (Bad Sisters), the series details the never-ending process of divorce and the awkward effects it has on everyday life.

Would you relive your 20s again if you had the chance? That’s exactly what single mom Liza strives to do when it’s near impossible to jump back into her career at 40. Freshly divorced with a daughter studying overseas, Liza passes herself off as 26-years-old and lands a publishing assistant gig in New York. (Where else?!) After making some fellow 20-something friends, leading double aged-gapped lives proves to be a harder secret to keep than she thought.
