The 49ers were not impressed with Daniel Jones on Thursday.
A number of San Francisco defensive players ripped the Giants quarterback after the game, citing his four-year, $160 million contract, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle’s Michael Silver.
“The dude did not want to throw the ball,” one anonymous defender told Silver. “Early on, you could tell it wasn’t gonna happen. Everything was a checkdown. At that point, we knew what time it was.”
49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw openly described Jones as overpaid.
“A lot of people who make all that money don’t even deserve it,” Greenlaw said. “I think they took a chance [when the Giants paid him]. I mean, he’s not bad. And if you ain’t got nothing better …”
That wasn’t all.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward quipped, “Forty million dollars a year is a lot of money.”
And still, there’s more.
One unnamed defensive player called the fifth-year quarterback’s contract “unbelievable.”
Another one called it “ridiculous,” and a third said of the deal: “That’s a travesty, man.”
Jones and the Giants’ offense struggled to get going against a 49ers defense widely considered among the best in football.
The 26-year-old play-caller threw for just 137 yards on 32 passing attempts (68.8% completion rate) with zero touchdowns, two sacks and an interception during the 30-12 loss.
In March, Jones and the Giants came to terms on a four-year deal worth $160 million, with the quarterback able to earn an additional $35 million in incentives.
The contract guarantees Jones $82 million over the first two years of the contract and a total of $94 million guaranteed.
At the time, Jones became the ninth NFL quarterback to average at least $40 million per year.
“I said after the season I love this place,” Jones said after the deal was made. “I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I want to be here. I have great respect for this organization, the Maras, the Tisches, my coaches and teammates. I am happy we were able to come to an agreement.”
