Although there are questions swirling around Trey Lance’s long-term future with the 49ers, one thing’s clear: the quarterback has his teammates’ full support.
A group of 49ers, including new quarterback Sam Darnold, were seen at a basketball game during the offseason without Lance in attendance, sparking rumors there may be a disconnect within the team.
However, San Francisco fullback Kyle Juszczyk dispelled the noise on a recent episode of the “Haberman and Middlekauff” podcast.
“Trey is beloved in our locker room,” Juszczyk said, according to 49ers Webzone.
“Everybody loves Trey. The dude really does work his ass off. He’s super personable. He is a very well-liked guy. So for whatever reason that he wasn’t at the basketball game, it’s not because we don’t like him.”
The 49ers’ third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has had a shaky entrance into the pros.
Lance has started just four games and thrown for 797 yards and five touchdowns against three interceptions.
His sophomore campaign was cut short in Week 2 when he suffered an ankle injury and underwent season-ending surgery.
Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo was then anointed the 49ers’ starting quarterback before he went down with an injury in December, paving the way for rookie sensation Brock Purdy.
Purdy won his first seven starts – playoffs included – before the Eagles beat the 49ers in January’s NFC Championship game.
The 23-year-old Purdy took the offseason to recover from torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) surgery that he had in March to repair the right elbow injury he suffered in the NFC title game.
Darnold, the Jets’ third overall pick in 2018, signed a one-year deal with the team in March.
With training camp approaching, the 49ers’ quarterback battle is going to be one to watch.
The 49ers open the season on Sunday, Sept. 10, against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.
