Four people were critically injured in two frightful wrecks on New York City highways over the weekend — including one accident Saturday night where the driver involved fled the scene on foot, police said.
Two young women were injured in a crash just after midnight Sunday on the eastbound side of the Long Island Expressway near the exit for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
The multiple-vehicle crash occurred when a Honda traveling eastbound in the left lane attempted to cross over three lanes of traffic — hitting the barrier and two other vehicles, police said.
Two female occupants, one in her 20s and one who is 22 years old, were transported to the hospital in critical condition, officials said. Police are investigating the incident.
A second wreck, a horrific seven-car collision on the Belt Parkway near Knapp Street in Brooklyn left at least five people hospitalized, including two who were in critical condition on Saturday, police said.
Police said the driver of an Infiniti sedan going eastbound lost control and struck a Mercedes Benz at around 9:30 p.m. before veering into the left lane and getting rear-ended by a Hyundai Palisade.
The Hyundai then overturned onto its side and entered the westbound lanes, where it was struck by a Honda Accord traveling westbound.
An Audi sedan, a Toyota Prius and a Nissan Rogue, all traveling west, then were involved in back-to-back rear-end collisions, police said.
The driver of the Infiniti sedan fled the accident on foot and had not been located by authorities.
Two people — a male driver and a 57-year-old woman sitting in the back seat of the Honda Accord — were critically injured. Both suffered severe trauma to the head and body and were taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, police said.
The driver of the Mercedes Benz was not injured, while the driver and passenger of the Hyundai Palisade, a 70-year-old man and woman, were taken to NYU Langone Hospital with minor injuries.
The 27-year-old driver of the Nissan Rogue sustained minor injuries and was taken to Coney Island Hospital, where he is in stable condition, police said.
The drivers in the Audi sedan and Toyota Prius remained at the accident and were not injured.
The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the accident.
