NextImg:2023-24 Stanley Cup predictions: NHL odds, picks, best bets

The dust has largely settled in the NHL offseason.

With the draft over, the free agency frenzy calming down and most teams up against the salary cap, we have a pretty good idea of how each team will look going into opening night.

There are still some loose ends to tie up — Alex DeBrincat is looking for a trade out of Ottawa, Erik Karlsson is likely to be dealt by San Jose and Vladimir Tarasenko is still a free agent — but it would be surprising if any of the moves to come shake the betting market all that much.

That means we can take our first hard look at the oddsboard for next season and begin to circle teams that should have our betting interest.

The Senators went into last season with high expectations thanks to a splashy offseason in which they added Claude Giroux and DeBrincat to an emerging core led by Tim Stutzle, Brady Tkachuk, Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson.

A slow start, inconsistent goaltending and injuries derailed Ottawa’s hype train out of the gates, but the Senators made a valiant push to get themselves on the fringe of the playoff mix in the second half before sputtering out.

Technically, last season was their best since 2016-17, but it still was underwhelming. Sounds like the perfect time to buy low.

Even if some of the shine has come off Ottawa since last summer, there are still a lot of reasons to be confident the Senators can make some serious noise in 2023-24.

First of all, they are loaded with talent up front.

Stutzle is a dark horse MVP candidate, Tkachuk is trending toward a 50-goal threat and secondary scorers, such as Claude Giroux, Josh Norris and Drake Batherson, can each pitch in a considerable amount of help.

All of those players, save for Giroux, are smack in the middle of their primes and could still have their best years ahead of them.

It’s a similar story on defense.

Thomas Chabot is an established workhorse at 26 years old, while Jake Sanderson looked like a force in his rookie season.

Ottawa added Jakob Chychrun midway through last season and, so long as he stays healthy, he should provide top-pair play for coach DJ Smith in 2023-24.

Additionally, the Atlantic Division is finally wide open.

The Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers all have questions to answer, while the Senators, Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings could contend for playoff spots.

The Sabres are the trendy pick among the potential gate-crashers, but Ottawa has just as much going for it as Buffalo and is more than double the price at some sportsbooks.

Ottawa’s biggest question mark will be in goal, but there’s a chance the tandem of Joonas Korpisalo and Anton Forsberg could work out splendidly. Forsberg has put up strong numbers the past two seasons when he’s been healthy and Korpisalo bounced back with his best stretch last winter.

Ottawa’s offensive firepower means that Forsberg and Korpisalo should only have to be slightly above-average to have success and if they can deliver on that, the Senators have serious life at this number.
