Two men were arrested just hours apart Thursday in connection with four separate sexual assaults targeting women that occurred in or near Manhattan’s Riverside Park within the past three weeks.
Luc Tatchiem Noubissi, 39, was taken into custody on suspicion of attacking a woman near West 59th Street early Thursday, while Jhonathan Yahir Cortes Lopez, 21, was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting two female park goers on Tuesday — and grabbing another woman in late June, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said during a press conference Friday.
“Based on these similar crimes and the proximity of locations, we believed and treated these incidents as being committed by one perpetrator,” Essig said.
But an investigation has revealed that the police were dealing with two different, unrelated, perpetrators.
Cops came across Noubissi around 2:30 p.m. Thursday — less than 12 hours after he allegedly tackled a woman walking through Riverside Park near West 59th Street around 4:45 a.m. and fondled her. When the victim tried to call 911, the perp grabbed her phone and took off running — but not before she managed to yank a chain off his neck.
Police said they recognized Noubissi from the description of the suspect, who was seen during the attack wearing a multicolored hat and a red shirt.
“During interrogation, he made incriminating statements, including leaving his chain on the scene and identifying himself on the scene,” Essig said.
When cops searched Noubissi’s home, they said they discovered the victim’s cellphone — and also the red shirt the 39-year-old was allegedly wearing in the park.
After being picked out of a lineup by the victim, Noubissi was charged with attempted rape, robbery, sexual abuse and assault.
At 7:30 p.m., NYPD detectives tracked video from the scene of an attack that occurred around 10 p.m. Tuesday, during which a 38-year-old woman jogging on the bike path near West 89th Street was accosted by a bike rider who tried to rape her.
The assailant, described as a Hispanic male wearing a red sports jersey with “40” on the back, pulled down the victim’s shorts and made “explicit statements,” Essig said.
Relying on surveillance video, cops arrived at an apartment building on West 125th Street, where Essig said they spotted a man matching the description of the attacker.
Detectives went up to the fourth floor, where they saw a similar bicycle to the one seen in the video, and a man in a red No. 40 jersey.
The suspect, identified as Cortes Lopez, allegedly made statements linking him to the West 89th Street attack — as well as to two other sexual assaults.
The more recent of the two occurred Tuesday at 4:40 p.m., when a woman walking in Riverside Park at West 79th Street was approached by a Hispanic man on a bike who grabbed her breasts and made “explicit statements.”
Cortes Lopez also has been tied to a forcible touching incident that took place on June 25 at West 111th Street and Amsterdam Avenue — just a short distance away from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
The 21-year-old has been charged with attempted rape, three counts of forcible touching, sexual abuse and assault.
Neither one of the two suspects has a prior criminal record, Essig said.
