Just over 100 New York City public school students listed their gender as “X” instead of “male” or “female,” after the nation’s largest school district provided the new option for non-binary pupils last fall.

The 108 X-identifying students represented about .01% of the district’s massive population of 1.1 million, Chalkbeat reported Tuesday.

The city’s Department of Education did not immediately return a request for comment from The Post.

Education officials allowed students to mark X on their official school records with parental permission after Albany officials began issuing driver’s licenses with the new category last year.

“X – Neither Female nor Male: My student does not identify as female or male (for example, identifies as non-binary, gender expansive, or gender fluid),” the DOE’s Student Name and Gender Change Request Form reads.

The city has been allowing students to change their gender status and play for the corresponding sports team of their preference without legal documentation since 2019.

In the 2021-22 school year, 300 of the state’s 2.4 million students identified as non-binary, according to a public breakdown of student demographics.

Both the city and state numbers are statistically insignificant, but LGBTQ advocates said the policies are symbolically important as Republican-led statehouses across the country ramp up attacks on gender identity.

“The first step to making sure a school is meeting the needs of its student body is knowing who is in the student body,” Allie Bohm, an attorney at the New York Civil Liberties Union, reportedly said.

“It’s really important that they’re collecting these data.”

New Title IX measures, proposed by the Biden administration and set to take place in October, would block parents from knowing whether their child identifies as a different gender in the classroom.

The Department of State has allowed Americans to choose X on their passports since 2021, after a non-binary applicant successfully sued after being denied one.
