Most major horror fans would have seen Sleepaway Camp at some point along the road, but maybe you’ve missed this cult classic slasher film. This type of movie is like horror-fan catnip: it’s prime ’80s, gory, a little bit cheesy, and has a finale that will be burned into your memory for a long time.

Photo: Everett Collection A great entry in the circular film or déjà vu subgenre, this British film from 2009 was not theatrically released in the US so for that reason alone it flew quite under the radar. It takes place primarily at sea, on an abandoned cruise ship. It’s atmospheric, bloody, and keeps you on your toes with the eerie plot as it untangles.

Photo: Everett Collection If you are a fan of horror comedies and have not seen this one, you should correct that. A group of college kids run into Tucker and Dale and think they’re about to be in a full on Deliverance situation. The misunderstanding is hilarious, and the film just gets more fun and funny from there.

#1: Mrs. Ganush, Drag Me to Hell (2009)
CREEP FACTOR: Her glass eye, her grotesque fingernails, her wandering blue tongue, and her ability to make it rain insects on command are enough to make Mrs. Ganush one of the most unforgettable, gruesome villains of of all time. Universal PicturesBefore Sam Raimi entered the Marvel Universe, he was (and of course remains) a horror icon thanks to his Evil Dead films. After focusing on his hugely successful Spider-Man trilogy, Raimi returned to horror in 2009 with Drag Me to Hell. Starring Alison Lohman and genre favorite Justin Long, the movie starts with Lohman’s character rejecting an old lady’s loan request, then ends… well, we won’t tell you if they get dragged to hell, you’ll have to see for yourself. The film leaves Prime Video after Halloween, time is ticking!

Photo: Everett Collection Anthony Hopkins was iconic as Hannibal Lecter, but a few years before he stepped into the role, none other than Brian Cox (Succession) played the notorious cannibal in Mindhunter. However, this movie isn’t really about him. It’s a great serial killer thriller, technically the original Hannibal Lector movie, and the ’80s soundtrack (courtesy of Tangerine Dream) is fantastic. This Michael Mann-directed movie has flown slightly under the radar, and if you haven’t seen it, it’s worth watching now.

Photo: Everett Collection A horror fan-favorite from Australia, this documentary-style movie is a slow burn that follows the family and friends of a teenager who tragically drowns, and the eerie and strange aftermath that occurs from there.

Photo: Uncork'd Entertainment Is this film cursed? You’ll have to see for yourself… Atmospheric and eerie, a brother and sister wander the woods after their pet dies. The film feels really quite evil, the type of movie where you might need to watch something very silly afterwards as a chaser.

Night Of The Demons (1988)
The lady demon on the cover of this classic makes Regan from The Exorcist look like Little Orphan Annie.

Photo Credit: The Horrors Of HalloweenAnother gem from the ’80s, this fun and gory movie takes place on Halloween and I personally have shown this movie at my Halloween party multiple times because it’s that wonderful. Teens, abandoned funeral parlor, sex, demons… what more could you ask for?

Photo: Dark Sky Films Ti West’s X, Pearl, and MaXXXine have become wildly popular mainstream films, but well before those, The House of the Devil was a film festival darling that blew horror fans away. A student needs cash, and decides to go for a babysitter job. When she arrives at the home, she learns the people have not been truthful and don’t even have children. So why is she there? This classic from the Aughts, which stars a pre-Barbie Greta Gerwig, is not to be missed.

Photo: Everett Collection Fans of creature features and cult content will enjoy this underseen film from 2017. All hell breaks loose after a police officer arrives late at night at a hospital with an injured man. This film draws comparisons to The Thing, and that is a very good thing indeed.
