National Security Adviser Mike Waltz will leave his post in the Trump administration, multiple news outlets reported on Thursday.

The news, first reported by Mark Halperin of 2Way, comes weeks after Waltz inadvertently added a journalist to a private Signal chat in which administration officials discussed sensitive information surrounding a U.S. military strike on Houthi rebels. President Donald Trump defended Waltz after the Atlantic’s report, telling reporters he “learned a lesson, and he’s a good man.”

Waltz’s reported ouster is a major shakeup in the president’s national security team as the administration confronts major challenges on the world stage, including the continuing war between Israel and Hamas and Russia’s ongoing invasion in Ukraine. The Trump administration has also spent recent weeks trying to broker talks with Iran regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

In recent weeks, Trump has elevated his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, to lead negotiations with Iran, Hamas, and Russia, stoking suspicion that the president prefers his leadership style over other national security officials in his immediate circle.

Former Representative Waltz (R., Fla.) is the second House Republican to get the boot from Trump’s inner circle in recent weeks. Former Representative Elise Stefanik (R., N.Y.), Trump’s initial pick to serve as U.S. ambassador to the U.N., was pulled from consideration amid concerns surrounding the House GOP’s slim majority, though her withdrawal preceded the confirmation process.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
