NextImg:The Corner: Who’s Afraid of a Cabinet Position?

On today’s edition of The Editors, Rich and Jim disagree over the longevity of Trump’s cabinet picks, if green-lighted.

“The . . . odd thing about these cabinet selections,” says Jim, “I think these people, I don’t know if they’re going to burn out, but being a cabinet secretary is not fun. It’s not a place to be a star. You’re not going to really enjoy sitting in meetings with government bureaucrats telling them to do the thing that you told them to do six months ago and five months ago and four months ago and they keep dragging their feet over this. I think a bunch of these folks are actually going to hate the jobs that they’re in and probably will be gone by the midterms.”

Rich pushes back, saying, “I don’t know. I take the point. I think a number will flame out because they don’t know what they’re doing and the buildings will defeat them. I’m not sure how much anyone ever hates these jobs. I mean, once they get there and you get your car and get your entourage and you get people calling you ‘Madam Secretary’ — I think that’s alluring to people. I think it’s hard to give up.”

“This is a cabinet that looks like a really great episode of Celebrity Apprentice,” says Jim. “They’re all used to being on TV. . . . But you look at the long history of running cabinets, that’s not what the job entails. The job entails a lot of administrative, a lot of paperwork, a lot of long fights against the entrenched bureaucracy.

“Some of them will probably thrive at it, but I could very easily see a bunch of them saying, ‘to heck with this, get me back to my TV contract. I want to be in the green room again.’”
