President Donald Trump’s appearance at the game marks the first time a sitting president has been to the Super Bowl. The game was held in New Orleans — the site of the New Year’s terror attack last month, in which an ISIS supporter rammed his truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing 14 and injuring dozens. On the field, Trump met with first responders and with the families of victims. New Orleans police, firefighters, EMS, and Louisiana state police were on the field during the coin toss, holding photos of the victims. The city’s resilience and strength was impressively showcased tonight.
Trump and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sat in the suite of New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson, as did House Speaker Mike Johnson, a few senators, and the Louisiana governor. The brother and mother of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes visited the suite to take a photo with the president. The crowd gave Trump a huge round of applause when he was shown on the screen during the national anthem. Taylor Swift (girlfriend of Chiefs player Travis Kelce), meanwhile, who endorsed failed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, was loudly booed.
