If there is one thing shown by the NATO commitment to spending 5 percent of GDP on defense and the lopsided EU trade deal, it’s that Trump is the alpha in the relationship with Europe. Previous U.S. presidents either didn’t realize the leverage we had or considered it bad form or otherwise unwise to fully exercise it. Trump, in contrast, was unabashed in throwing his weight around and has, for better or worse (NATO spending — better, in my view; trade deal — mostly worse), achieved things that he has talked about for years. It’s nice to be POTUS.
