That was Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai’s (apocryphal, unfortunately) take on the French Revolution in a meeting with Henry Kissinger. In that spirit, it’s certainly too soon to know how Trump’s Ukraine diplomacy will play out. Putin certainly seemed to move the ball in his direction on a cease-fire and potential new U.S. sanctions in Alaska, but we’ve got a meeting with Zelensky and the Europeans tomorrow and perhaps a trilateral Trump-Putin-Zelensky meeting to come. What must be avoided is a split in the Western alliance, which Putin surely wants, and if there’s a deal, security arrangements that make it difficult for Putin to take a third bite at the apple in Ukraine are essential.
