There are now 20,000 fewer children born every year in the Irish state compared with the Celtic Tiger years, according to new data from Ireland’s Central Statistics office.

Ireland has been at below-replacement fertility since 2009 and is now sharply declining to 1.5 births per woman. The average age of a mother at maternity is 33.3.

And it doesn’t look like economic or social trends are in favor of a revival. Another report on the housing crisis in Ireland indicates that among those aged 25–29, homeownership rates have dropped to just 7 percent.
