No, it didn’t involve sensitive information about an impending military attack, but when Waltz was talking last night about a contact getting sucked into the wrong place, I had an immediate sense of recognition.
A couple of weeks ago, a colleague sent me someone’s phone number by text. I wanted to save this number, but unbeknownst to me, it saved under my colleague’s name. When shortly thereafter, I sent a text to a chain including my colleague, the other person piped up to say he was randomly on the chain and it must be an error.
I deleted what I thought was the erroneous contact, but still, a few days later, the numbers were occasionally getting crossed. Eventually, I realized that the number had saved as one of the multiple numbers under my colleague’s contact. Finally, I deleted that number and my problem was solved.
I’m not relating any of this to minimize what happened or to endorse Signal as a means of having such discussions, but it’s the first time that there’s been a significant national security breach and I’ve thought, “Ahh, I think I just did that, too.”
