On this week’s first edition of The Editors, Rich is joined by Audrey, Jim, and Michael for a discussion of a recent New York Times interview with Joe Biden. The interview included an important piece of information, namely: Biden’s extensive use of the autopen.
“This is absolutely worth probing,” says Audrey. “Republicans have been going after this, but this is also of course of interest to Democrats.”
“I’m glad that people are reporting on it and that the administration is investigating it. . . . Also in this piece, they talk about the sign-off procedure. This quote just was stunning to me, that ‘Mr. Zients [the chief of staff] hit reply all and wrote, “I approve the use of the autopen for the execution of all the following pardons.”‘ That’s remarkable. That means a staffer was making these decisions.”
MBD doesn’t disagree that Biden’s actions seem suspect, but he doesn’t “think the public . . . is extremely moved by the scandal”
“I think the more corrupt stuff felt like the Hunter Biden stuff precisely because the benefits are so personal. Weirdly, the public is . . . indifferent about abuses of executive power that involve just pure political favor trading.”
