A Manhattan jury on Monday convicted Nadine Arslanian Menendez, the wife of former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, who accepted bribes from three businessmen and the Egyptian government for years.
Nadine Menendez was found guilty on 15 federal bribery and conspiracy charges after jurors deliberated for about eight hours over the course of two days, according to news reports. The verdict was read in court Monday afternoon.
In July 2024, Bob Menendez, a Democrat, was convicted on 16 felony counts, including obstruction of justice, acting as a foreign agent, bribery, extortion, and honest services wire fraud. The charges stemmed from his acceptance of hundreds of thousands of dollars, gold bars, and a Mercedes-Benz convertible in exchange for helping three New Jersey businessmen with legal issues and acting as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt and Qatar.
At the time, Menendez was serving as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He stepped down from the committee shortly after he and his wife were indicted in September 2023. He resigned from Congress a month after his conviction last year.
“Nadine Menendez and Senator Menendez were partners in crime. Over the span of five years, Nadine Menendez agreed to accept and accepted all sorts of bribes – including gold bars, cash, a Mercedes-Benz convertible, and a no-show job – all in exchange for the Senator’s corrupt official acts. Together, Nadine Menendez and the Senator placed their own interests and greed ahead of the interests of the citizens the Senator was elected to serve,” acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky said.
“Today’s verdict sends the clear message that the power of government officials may not be put up for sale, and that all those who facilitate corruption will be held accountable for their actions,” he added.
Nadine Menendez acted as the intermediary between her husband and the three businessmen who funneled bribes to the couple from the Egyptian and Qatari governments, according to federal prosecutors. The duo received more than $400,000 in cash and $150,000 worth of gold bars, as well as the Mercedes-Benz.
Former insurance broker Jose Uribe testified that he gave the vehicle in exchange for Bob Menendez’s help in shutting down an insurance fraud probe led by the New Jersey attorney general’s office. Uribe pleaded guilty to his alleged role in the years-long bribery scheme, after which he cooperated with the federal government.
Following the conclusion of Nadine Menendez’s trial, Uribe is set to be sentenced on Thursday.
The other two businessmen, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, were sentenced alongside Bob Menendez in January for similar offenses. Hana faces more than eight years in prison, and Daibes faces seven years.
Nadine Menendez’s trial was delayed for months because she was being treated for breast cancer.
Bob Menendez is set to turn himself over to authorities on June 6 to start serving his eleven-year prison sentence. He has vowed to appeal his conviction.
His wife faces sentencing on June 12.
“This is a very rough day for us,” her lawyer said outside the courthouse, according to news reports. “The case is not over, and there will be other days, and we look forward to that.”
