At least two people were killed in Russian attacks on Ukraine overnight as Moscow and Kyiv continued to exchange drone, missile and artillery strikes ,regional officials said on Wednesday morning.
In the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said that a 62-year-old woman and an elderly man had been killed and a 55-year-old woman had been hospitalised after the Russia attack at around 7:30am on Wednesday morning, in its second deadly attack on the city in 24 hours.
Ukrainian energy company DTEK said that two of its engineers had been injured in a Russian strike overnight that “seriously damaged” an unnamed thermal power plant, while regional energy provider Chernihivoblenergo said over 4,500 people had been left without electricity after an attack on an energy facility in Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region.
In the neighbouring Sumy region, a Russian drone strike near the town of Krasnopillya left a four-year-old girl in critical condition, Governor Oleh Hryhorov said, with the girl’s mother and grandmother also hospitalised due to their injuries.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia had launched 183 drones at the country overnight, with air defences downing 154 of them and 22 strikes recorded at 11 locations across Ukraine.
Across the border in Russia’s southwestern Belgorod region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said three people had been killed and one more injured in a Ukrainian missile strike on a sports centre in the town of Maslova Pristan, around 15km from the Ukrainian border.
“Emergency Situations Ministry personnel and self-defence fighters are already working at the scene, clearing the debris”, Gladkov said, adding there “may still be people trapped underneath”.
Pro-Kremlin Telegram channel Mash reported that at least three missiles had hit the sports centre and that all the victims had been members of staff.
Three people, including a four-year-old girl, were also injured in a separate strike on Tuesday night, when a Ukrainian missile struck a house in the Belgorod region village of Moshchyonoye, Gladkov said.
The attacks came just a day after a Ukrainian missile strike on a power plant in the regional capital Belgorod that killed two people.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Wednesday morning that air defence systems had downed 53 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 28 over the Belgorod region.
