A woman in the city of Irkutsk, in Russia’s Far East, has been charged with “discrediting” the Russian army for an Instagram story in which she lambasted soldiers and the Russia Day holiday, the regional Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday.
The ministry said that its investigation into Maria Makhmutova was ongoing, adding that she could face further criminal and civil charges. It was also revealed that Makmutova had been admitted to a psychiatric clinic after her detention on Friday, but was discharged on Tuesday.
The police announced later on Wednesday that Makhmutova had been taken into police custody for further questioning.
The statement followed a series of posts on Makhmutova’s social media on Wednesday, in which she claimed that she had not been charged. “No drugs, no alcohol, no nuthouse, no jail, no administrative charges, no criminal charges,” she wrote in a post on VK, as reported by regional outlet Ircity.ru. “I know my rights without any lawyers.”
On Thursday, Makhmutova, a 35-year-old blogger with some 5,000 followers, published an expletive-laden video to her personal Instagram account. In it, she labelled Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine “undignified murderers”, and described Russia Day — celebrated on 12 June to mark the anniversary of Russia’s declaration of sovereignty in 1990 — as a “fucked holiday”.
“Do you guys have anything to be fucking proud of? What the fuck are you proud of? What are you living for, you’re eating your last dick without salt! That you have to kill people to buy cars and fucking apartments?” she said, adding that if all Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine “died tomorrow”, she would “drink wine”.
The video was reposted on the same day by Russian conservative pro-war movement Call of the People, which called her “a woman with a filthy tongue who wishes death on our fighters” and lodged an official complaint with the Prosecutor General’s Office.
