A Russian veteran of the war in Ukraine has been taken into police custody on suspicion of beating a fellow veteran to death with a metal chair and dumping his body in the lift of his apartment building in the southern Russian city of Volgograd, local news website Vysota 102 reported on Wednesday.

Building residents reportedly alerted the police after finding a dead body in the lift following the incident at the alleged assailant’s home on Tuesday. The suspected murderer, who has been named by police as 31-year-old Alexander B., was implicated by a trail of blood that led from the lift to his apartment, Vysota 102 said.

According to investigators, the men had been drinking together when they got into an argument, during which the host grabbed a metal stool and began beating his friend over the head with it until he stopped showing signs of life. He then decided to dump the body in the building’s lift before going to bed.

The dead man, who was identified by Vysota 102 as Sergey G., a 48-year-old fellow veteran who had served in an assault detachment in Ukraine, had himself previously been convicted of murder.

Alexander B., who also served on the front line in Ukraine and had previously been imprisoned three times for theft, robbery and disturbing the peace, confessed to the murder, according to Vysota 102.
