A Russian airstrike launched on Tuesday on the city of Dnipro, in southeastern Ukraine, killed at least nine people and injured at least 153, Dnipropetrovsk Governor Serhiy Lysak has reported.

At least 12 people are in critical condition following the attack, Lysak wrote, adding that the attack targeted several civilian buildings and a passenger train. Among the injured are 18 children, with the youngest being six months old, Lysak said.

On Tuesday, Russian troops also attacked the city of Samar in the Dnipropetrovsk region, killing two people, bringing the total death toll in the region to 11.

Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov said on Telegram that the attack on the city was one of the most brazen of the war to date, posting pictures of damaged schools and hospitals. “We will cope. And we will continue to defend our country. Because even such insidious and cynical attacks cannot intimidate us,” Filatov wrote.

Several passengers on a civilian train travelling between the Ukrainian cities of Odesa and Zaporizhzhia were injured in the strike. Lysak published photos of a damaged train car showing smashed windows and bloodied sheets on his Telegram channel.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky published a video of the damaged train on X, urging Ukraine’s allies to increase sanction pressure on Russia and stressing that Russia was incapable of producing ballistic missiles targeting Ukraine without foreign-made components.

“Russia knows exactly why it continues this war — and it is a complete disregard for life and an attempt to cleanse our land of people. This is not a fight where it’s hard to choose a side. Standing with Ukraine means defending life. I am grateful to everyone who is helping,” Zelensky wrote.
