A woman’s body has been found under the rubble of a house in Kyiv that was damaged in a Russian drone strike in the early hours of New Year’s Day, the city authorities announced on Wednesday.

Seven others were injured in overnight drone strikes on the Ukrainian capital, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said, with rescue efforts ongoing.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that most of those wounded had been victims of an attack on the city centre in which two upper floors of a residential building were partially destroyed, adding that falling debris had blown out windows in an apartment building elsewhere in the city.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ukrainian Air Force said that the Russian military had launched 111 drones at targets in Ukraine.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) said that its air defences had shot down 63 Russian drones overnight, adding that another 46 had failed to reach their targets, while another two had landed in Russia and Belarus.

Bryansk region Governor Alexander Bogomaz also reported that two drones had been shot down over the western Russian region early on Wednesday.
